Dagpo Dratsang Renovation Project (India, 2015–present)
In 2015, the monastery requested support for the construction of a sustainable heating system. Studies conducted in 2016 and 2017 by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) revealed that the buildings were poorly insulated and posed significant risks due to the danger of earthquakes and landslides. The conclusion was that heating could not be installed until the buildings met certain safety and insulation standards. In 2018, engineering firm Arup therefore carried out additional geological and structural research, which showed that extensive renovation – and in some cases reconstruction – was necessary.
TDEF played a key role during this period by establishing contacts with TU Delft and Arup, supervising the research and financing the travel and accommodation costs of the research teams. In 2017, a donation was also made to the monastery for renovation, insulation and heating. At the end of 2018, the WHISE Foundation was established to coordinate the renovation project and fundraising. In the meantime, temporary measures have been taken to improve comfort and safety, such as insulating floor coverings, mobile heating and curtains. (See also the website of the WHISE Foundation.)
